The John D McClure Alumni Society

Fellow Cal Theta Alumni:
My name is James Waterman (Spring ’83).  I should say THE class of Spring ’83!  I ask that each of you read this email in its entirety and join in the call to action at the end of this communication.

I am a newly elected member of the Cal Theta Alumni Board of Directors.  Many of you attended the recent annual meeting during which an even number of incumbent and newly elected board members were brought together with the collaborative goal of assuring that the Cal Theta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon continues a long standing tradition of fun and excellence.

Those of you in attendance at the annual meeting were exposed first hand to a number of the challenges faced by the current chapter and, candidly, the Alumni Board itself.  I assume that you, like I, also enjoyed seeing brothers that you had not seen in 20+ years.  And how cool was it to see Mr. McClure?  We walked into that building and recognized each other immediately.  We enjoyed a few laughs at the grey hairs and/or lack thereof.  More than a few bellies were notably bigger than they used to be and that was worth a warm smile as well.  We all witnessed that over the decades young men had turned into professionals and we were also thrown back to our “glory years” as a bunch of young men figuring out what the fraternity, and the world for that matter, had to offer us.   Having now met all of the current active chapter, I can assure you that they are enjoying the same experience that we did in our days as young Sig Eps.

Putting the lively debate and differences of opinion aside (as it should be at this point), one critical issue at the annual meeting stood tall above the rest.  One look at the financial statement that was distributed during the annual meet said it all.  Simply stated, and for the following reasons (to name a few) the chapter and alumni association are in dire financial states:

·         As our active chapter is low in man power, we are paying the national chapter a “minimum fee” that exceeds the head count contribution of our dues paying active membership.

·         We are “in the red” $800 per month on our fraternity house rent vs. mortgage.

·         We are sitting on a house mortgage that is based upon a variable loan, currently at 9%...and rising.

·         We owe back taxes, insurance, and other fees that are compounding.

It was a recognition of the above that compelled me to volunteer to be the Fund Raising Chair for the Alumni Board.  I assure you that I and the entire alumni board worked hard to develop a fund raising strategy that accomplished the following principles:

Worth Every Penny – Donations will yield an alumni experience that is worth every penny of the donation.
Lifelong - Donations are driven by activities that are specifically organized for the enhancement of the alumni’s lifelong fraternal experience.
Effectively Managed - Donations are repeated yearly through an organized and managed annual process to assure program value over generations of Cal Theta Sig Eps.
Serve the Young Men of Cal Theta – Through balanced man scholarships, mentoring, housing, and leadership development..

With our core principles outlined, the Alumni Board has launched the “John D. McClure Alumni Society.”  Please open and read the attached PDF file…

Having read the attached…this is the game plan guys.  We are committed to delivering a lifelong experience for you as alumni and we are committed to using the proceeds to benefit the organization.  We are going to use the funds to dig ourselves out of the financial hole, to continue the great tradition of the Balanced Man Scholarship program, to upgrade rooms at the Chapter house to drive increased residence, and to rebuild a financial foundation that will serve these young men.

Now the call to action:

1)      Whether you are enthused by the prospect of reuniting with generations of Cal Theta via joining the John D. McClure Alumni Society for the long haul, or merely willing to help out financially just one time, we sincerely need you to address an envelope and send a $250 donation…today.  So that your former brothers know you are “in,” please hit “reply all” and state your name / pledge class followed by “I Am In.”  Please make checks payable to Theta Cal, Inc. and send by mail to my attention at:

5301 Milton Ranch Road
Shingle Springs, CA  95682

2)      We need volunteers to help remodel the bedrooms at the fraternity house.  Believe it or not, the family lines are still quite alive.  So we decided to have some fun with the project.  We seek 69’s, 5’s, 7’s or any other family lineage to volunteer to be project managers and participants for the bedroom makeovers..  Each lineage will makeover a single room and, hereafter, that bedroom will have a room number - and be occupied by a grandson, so to speak.  Take pride in this and have some fun in the process.  Taking it one step further, we seek past Active Chapter Presidents to makeover the President’s room at the house.  Andy, Tim, Mark, Tom and all others…are you in?  Hit “replay all” and be heard.  Let’s have some fun with this.

There are roughly 100 active alumni (on this distribution list).  If each of you 100 contribute $250, we will have a solid start at $25,000 raised..  We need every penny of it.

Let me end by stating thank you, and:

“I AM IN” for $250.
