Re: The JDM Alumni Society(2009)

Fellow Cal Theta Alumni:

My name is Mark Fulwider (Fall ’85), and  I’m newly appointed as the chair of the John D. McClure Alumni Society and part of the Cal Theta Alumni Board of Directors. James Waterman previously handled this position, and we all  thank him for starting the society and helping generate over $7,500 dollars in the society’s first year.

For those alumni brothers listed below that contributed funds last year, the chapter and alumni board are deeply thankful to you for your financial support at a critical juncture of the Cal Theta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon. A special thanks to those brothers that contributed funds above and beyond.  I’m pleased to say, the chapter has made great strides and has turned the corner.  The turnaround would not have been possible without the following JDM Society Members’ contributions detailed below:

$500 Contribution in 2008
Clayton Holcomb, Corey Teibout

$250 Contribution in 2008
Andy Beal, Ben Hester, Casy Hayden, Charles Chambliss, Geoff Georman, Jack Ford, James Waterman, Jeff Longwell, Kevin Kay, Kevin Nishita, Mark Fulwider, Martin Powers, Michael McGee, Patrick Dunlap, Paul Bollard, Richard Giusti, Roberto Cazares, Rolf Mandich, Scott Lawrie, Thor Rayward, Tim McCormick, Wayne Mattson

If you contributed like me, I’m sure you would like to know your contribution made a difference and the funds were used as promised. Well, read on!

There were serious manpower and financial issues that needed to be addressed, or we could possibly not have a chapter on campus today.  To refresh your memory,  I’ve pasted below the chapter issues and immediate objectives of the JDM Society from last year’s letter requesting your contribution:

  • “As our active chapter is low in man power, we are paying the national chapter a “minimum fee” that exceeds the head count contribution of our dues paying active membership”.  Status: Active chapter had huge fall recruitment of 16 new brothers, and we anticipate another strong Spring rush.  Three Balanced Man scholarships were given using the JDM Society funds for incoming freshman.

  • “We are “in the red” $800 per month on our fraternity house rent vs. mortgage”.  Status:  House has full occupancy and is operating in the positive each month.  The improvements made to the house have made it a much more desirable place to live.

  • “ We owe back taxes, insurance, and other fees that are compounding” Status:  Everything is current-  (Note that the JD McClure Society money has only been used for house improvement and scholarships).

  • The Fraternity House (Yes, they own a house!) needed some improvements. Status:  Dry rotted stairs/posts have been replaced that were a safety hazard, Bathroom Sinks replaced (terrible 20” high pedestal sinks that were built for 4 year olds because the house used to be a day care center) (see picture of new sinks attached), New Carpet in every room (see picture attached), cabinets painted, walls repaired, new front lawn put in…) There were multiple clean up days that were very well supported by Alumni.  Everything was done very inexpensively or donated. Come see for yourself, the house is at 2112 10th St, Sacramento.

  • What other strides has the undergraduate chapter made on their own? How about: 2008 Greek Week Champions(2nd time in last five years) while again awarded the highest GPA on campus.

  • The #1 accomplishment in my opinion: The Chapter is still alive and thriving again, and alumni are getting involved.  It would not have happened without the JDM Society’s help keeping the chapter afloat. I hope you agree, the Alumni board and chapter has held up their end!!!!

If you’re like me,  most of my closest friends today are Sig Eps I see on  regular basis. I’ve received jobs and business referrals over the years from brothers.  Essentially, I’m continuing to receive benefits today from being a part of Cal Theta.  I feel it’s my duty and pleasure to give back to make sure this thing keeps going.  I honestly barely missed my $250 donation last year, but the chapter benefited hugely from it.    I’ve taken this position in the hope of taking the JDM Society to the next level and help ensure the Cal Theta chapter is viable continuing to offer young brothers the lifelong friendships that I’ve enjoyed. Trust me, these young brothers are worth our support, and they are very much like we were at their age.

The JDM Society needs your support now:

There are still pressing issues that we need your financial help to address. The goal for 2008 was to generate $25,000, and we fell short. The house needs a new roof and the chapter has no emergency fund to address any unforeseen issues with the fraternity house that’s almost 100 years old.  The boards goal is to start awarding again the Robert Arnes Scholorship, Craig Miller Schlorship and the Pat Astafan Schlarship.

Your tax deductible donations are repeated at the beginning of each year through an organized annual process to assure program value over generations of Cal Theta Sig Eps.  We are asking for Alumni brothers to contribute $250 like last year. This year, we are asking for that amount again, but we any contribution is appreciated in   As a thank you to the JDM Society contributors in 2009, members will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Discount & gift at our 45 Annual Sweatheart’s Ball on April 11th, 2009
  • Discount at Alumni Golf Tournaments and events as scheduled
  • Invited to special events for the JDM Society members.

“I’m in” again this year for a contribution of $250. Can we count on you? If so, please reply all, so other Alumni know you “Are In”.

Please your contributions can be paid via credit card or mail to the following address payable to “JDM Society”:

Check payable to JDM Society and mail to:

Lastly, we are not just looking for $.  We hope that you will get connected with Sig Ep again.  The benefits of brotherhood are lifelong if you make the effort. Join us at our 45 Annual Sweatheart’s Ball on April 11th, 2009.

Team Sig Ep Rides in AIDS/Lifecycle 8

On May 31, 2009 Active brothers Cliff Whitlock and Adam Miller will be joined by Alumni Aaron Robison (Fall ’04) and Casey Hayden (Fall ’79) to ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles in AIDS/Lifecycle 8.  The seven day event is a 545 mile bicycle ride benefiting the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center.  Last year, 2500 riders and 500 roadies raised $11.6 million for the fight against AIDS/HIV.
--------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Team Sig Ep is outfitted with bikes, helmets, jerseys and sunblock and will start intensive training this month.  Each participant has committed to raise a minimum of $3000. and we are asking for the generous support of our brothers.

Please visit our homepage at
www.tofighthiv.org/goto/teamsigep to donate online.  You can maximize your donation by distributing payments over a 10 month period (a $300 pledge can be made at $30/month).

If all goes well, the goal is to make this a yearly philanthropy involving both senior actives and alumni brothers to further our aspirations of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love in Sigma Phi Epsilon and the ideals of the Balanced Man: Sound Mind, Sound Body.

For more information on the ride, visit www.aidslifecycle.org

Thank you for your support.  It’s great to be a Sig Ep!

Fraternally,

Casey Hayden
